Petrify stuns the enemy for a medium duration of time but increases the health regeneration of the affected foe. The stunned enemy can take a small amount of damage before the stun disappears and seems to be similar to the ‘sheep’ mage skill in World of Warcraft.
It is a very interesting ability of the Dragon Knight. On the one hand, it allows you to disable the target for a medium duration, but on the other hand the enemy will get increased HP regeneration. The effect is not strong but still can help a low health foe, so bare this in mind when using it. That’s why it is a great spell to use somewhere in the beginning of the fight as your target has full health and will not get the benefits from regeneration. On the other hand, using this spell in the beginning is a little bit risky. The enemy will have a full stamina and magicka pool and will probably be able to dispel or break the effect.
Despite the healing buff Petrify is an outstanding ability for controlling foes. It allows a DK to disable any target, thereby decreasing the number of active enemies. The general difference between Petrify and other stunning spells is that the effect of stunning spells usually disappears when the affected enemy receives damage. Petrify can absorb some damage without being disabled. This makes this ability very valuable in massive PvP and PvE fights, when players use many AoE abilities. It may be that some AoE spells will not deal enough damage to disable Petrify.
Of course if the affected foe is attacked, or if the overall damage exceeds the limit, the effect of Petrify will be broken. Look to use this skill if you’re outnumbered in a fight or need time to prepare a quick getaway.
